Anne Caswell

Despite not having come to dance until the last years of high school, Anne graduated from William-Smith College in 1983 with a double major in dance and English. While not having any expectations of a professional career in dance, after moving to New York City, she continued to pursue dancing and choreography whenever the opportunity arose. Anne particularly enjoyed projects with improvisational or unusual elements like creating movement to poetry or being part of the experimental theater group The Living Theater.

Anne moved to Silicon Valley in 1999 and first encountered DanceVisions, not surprisingly, through Do Your Own Dance, a weekly free-form improvisational dance which she eventually came to lead. Her involvement with DanceVisions increased as her children participated in Laura Zweig’s classes (they even choreographed their own dance in one of the informal studio performances) and Anne discovered belly dancing and, encouraged by fellow member Karin Moriarty, became involved with contact improvisation.

Over the years, along with Do You Own Dance, Anne taught beginning belly dance classes, family yoga, performed in studio shows and collaborated with Karin Moriarty on several dance workshops and events.

Several years ago, health issues constrained Anne’s involvement in the dance world and she is deeply grateful to DanceVisions for being able to provide the space for her to work on an individual basis as well as to continue Do Your Own Dance as an occasional event. Eventually, Anne was able to perform again in a recent show and looks forward to continue bringing Do Your Own Dance to the community as an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to experience the joy of dance and movement.
